This is a RARE adorable matched set of vintage M. I. Hummel bookends, HUM 252/ A+B, featuring "Apple Tree Girl" HUM 141/0 and "Apple Tree Boy" HUM 142/0 made in Germany by Goebel in the 1960s, these figurines were originally modeled in 1940 by Arthur Moeller. They are adorable rosy-cheeked children, both sitting in apple trees that are mounted on varnished hardwood bookends, the stands depict a wood slat fence that holds books upright and protects the figurines. Both figures are signed on the back of the base, M. I. Hummel, each stand is engraved with the stylized bee inside the wide "V" trademark and M.I. Hummel., the bottoms have foam cushions for furniture protection. “Hummel” is the German word for “bumblebee.” The letter “V” is for “Verkaufsgesellschaft,” a German word meaning “sales company.” Both cute and coveted by collectors, Hummel figurines were one of the hottest collectibles of the 20th century, their appeal continues today.
In excellent condition, these figurines have no chips, cracks or repairs, the colors are crisp and bright. The wood stands are study and very well made, wear is consistent with age and use. History of Hummel Figurines:
People have continued to cherish M.I. Hummel figurines over many decades. The charming figurines depicting sweet children and babies warm the hearts of many collectors and fans. The success of M.I. Hummel figurines are built on a long-standing tradition of attention to detail, quality production, and faithfulness to the vision of the artist. The artist responsible for these adorable creations was Berta Hummel. Children were largely the subjects of her drawings. Religion was also important to Berta Hummel. She entered a convent where she continued to pursue her artwork and later changed her name to Maria Innocentia. Her drawings began to be published on postcards. Franz Goebel liked the drawings and made an agreement with her to produce porcelain figurines from her images. Only Goebel's company was granted the right to produce the figurines based on M.I. Hummel's drawings. The actual creation of an M.I. Hummel figurine is a laborious process. Each one is lovingly painted by hand. This is a long process, but well worth the wait. The last Hummel by Gobel was produced in 2008.

A bit about vintage...a vintage item is at least 20 years old.
