Vintage Menu, The Royalist, outlet Souvenir Menu, Restaurant Ephemera, Vintage Advertising, Vintage New York, Greenwich Village, Barney Gallant
In 1937, Barney Gallant opened The Royalist at 86 University Place. He had gained celebrity years ago by being the first person in New York to be prosecuted under the Volstead Act. When police were arresting his wait staff, Gallant took full responsibility and spent 30 days in The Tombs. He went on to open a series of speakeasies and cafes throughout Greenwich Village. All of which were popular with locals and visitors from uptown who wanted to "breath the faintly naughty atmosphere in safety." This 12 inch tall menu has a fairly clean cover with only minor smudging ion the upper left. The back has a little more shelf wear. Inside is clean. It has been folded (most old menus are) but it is in very nice frameable condition with no rips, or tears.
