On 20 Feb 1885, James McNeill Whistler gave his “10 O'Clock” lecture, Piccadilly, London, attacking social use of art.

The first book by James Abbott McNeill Whistler, an American artist based primarily in the UK, working during the "Gilded Age" in America. Hailed by Oscar Wilde as a 'masterpiece', Whistler's text serves as a major expression of his belief in the theory "art for art's sake". Opposed to the predominant Victorian notion that art must serve a social or moral function, within this lecture Whistler proposed that art should rather exist for its own end, and not attempt to moralize. Whistler repeatedly applied this belief to his own paintings, and has often been heralded as the leading proponent of this artistic philosophy.

This would make an excellent gift for the lover of art and artists.
