Date: ca. 1910-1930
Combining the practical with the esthetic, this attractive rectangular wooden tray is of a perfect size for breakfast in bed or to carry out those champagne glasses to your guests. outlet The checkerboard pattern has been made up of oak squares laid out with the grain in opposing directions; it has darker fillets around the border. The edge of the tray is raised and in oak. Two beautiful quality made brass handles in a typical curvy Art Nouveau style protrude from the rim. The tray stands on four sturdy brass feet also of very good quality.
Stylistically this tray forms a bit of a conundrum; the oak checkerboard motif is very Art Deco in style whilst the brass handles and feet are very much of the Art Nouveau style. I believe this is a hybrid between the two periods and styles, the tray being made in the Art Deco period with brass ware from the previous stylistic period; they don't seem to be later replacements seeing as there are no visible repair marks.
Condition:
Good. Sturdy. Some minor scuff marks as can be expected on an item of this age that has been used for its purpose. There are some gaps in between some of the squares but the sturdiness is not affected. In the back one can see a crack on one side but this also does not affect the sturdiness (see photo).
