Here is a lovely little antique book - a rare find - written by the Rev. Daniel Wise and published by New York's Carlton & Phillips. "Young Lady's Counsellor" is inscribed to the "young women of America" and outlines "the sphere, the duties and the dangers of young women", and is "designed to be a guide to true happiness in this life, and to glory in the life which is to come."
There is a very pretty illustration of a young woman in the beginning of the book, after which comes chapters devoted to "The Mistake of a Lifetime", "The Fountain of Life Unsealed", "Self-reliance", "Loveliness of Spirit" and more.
This book shows its age of more than 150 years, but I think that adds to its character. The pages are yellowed and spotted, but definitely readable, the cover is stained and the spine worn on the ends. The binding is intact and I don't see any pages missing.
This antique book for young ladies measures 4 1/2" x 7". The cover is black with beautiful gold lettering and floral motif on the spine, and the cover is also embossed. In outlet the middle of the cover on both sides are the letters MBC (I don't know what that stands for). Also on the first page there are the slightest remains of an inscription, and on the second page is stamped S. C. Welton. There are 251 pages.
There are actually three dates printed in the book: 1851, 1852 and 1854.
