Voices Ancient and Modern

The ocarina is a very ancient musical instrument whose subtle and expressive voice has caught the ear of people in all parts of the world from prehistory to the present. Early examples from Eastern Europe have been dated to 20,000 B.C. Ocarinas were also known in the Far East and in the Americas, where they were used for religious music, healing, and for entertainment from an early date. Ocarinas have been crafted from mammoth ivory, bone, wood and, most often, clay.
Each of our ocarinas begins as a ball of clay, carefully pulled and pinched into the form of an egg, then individually tuned and decorated by hand while still “green” and soft. This pinching technique produces a denser, more durable product than other types of ceramic ware. Our special firing technique combines the hardness of kiln firing with the appearance of traditional pit-fired ware. After firing, each piece is fine-tuned to give it a clear, sweet voice.
Each ocarina is unique in voice and appearance, and equally capable of simple airs, intricate jigs, or free-form meditations in sound. Our multi-chambered models (pocket pipes) are a Roachworks exclusive, featuring one or more drone chambers to complement the melody. Inspired by the sound of the dulcimer and bagpipes, these unique pipes add new dimensions for the Celtic and traditional musician, while providing the beginner with a full and satisfying sound from the start.
Logic, intuition, and more than a little magic have led us to the creation of an instrument that is both practical and pleasing. For more than three decades, we have experimented with modal tunings and harmonies to develop an instrument that is playable for a wide range of musical styles.

These are old as dirt itself. People have been making whistles like this for 40,000 years.
Not a true ocarina, I don't put a whole scale on these, so they are particularly easy to learn. They have two large holes that give a 4-note range, with a fun sliding sound possible by rolling or sliding your fingers on the holes. Many of them do span the octave, but in a freeform, intuitive way. They are small, so they have a high delicate sound. I put all the same care into the mouthpiece to be sure of a sweet pleasing sound, requiring only a light breath. They are a lot of fun; being small, they are easy to wear and make a great pendant. The highly burnished, oft-handled shapes and surfaces feel like a worry-stone in your hands - worn smooth and proper by my hands in the making.

I developed this whistle for a friend I met back in the 80's who led native workshops and guided spirit journeys. He played a taped recording for me of the sound he needed, and this is what I made. It makes a very shrill, very high sound, indeed. But what I heard in the recording, I was already familiar with from my native american whistles. Play two notes together that are not the same, but almost, or almost a harmonic; your ear will be shocked and confused and it will hear a sort of beat; one note and then the other, back and forth. Then it sounds like the sound is coming from the back of your head; then things begin to happen.I have no doubt it inclines one to a meditative out-of-body experience. This is what my friend James was doing in his classes, and they regularly reported interesting experiences to me over about three decades. I still have a handful of these I decided to offer up to you all out there. I also make them bigger, with softer, lower sounds. The beat is still there, and the effects.

Full Moon and the Twa Corbies is the similar idea, but somewhat larger, and built with three chambers, three voices. I make my triples all in a row. The focus of breath must be absolutely the same and carefully balanced for all chambers to sound at the same time, same breath. Quite a trick, really. These are the corbies, the ravens, the crows; a mystical whistling triple, inspired by my very birdy wild environment, and the fantastic full moon that rises here over the huge Ohio River Valley. Her full moon was in Pisces and on the autumn equinox. She has a much lower, more pleasing voice, while still hitting the "beat" of the double dissonant sound that triggers the voyaging. There is a lot more sound in there, once you get going. You can pass your thumb over a hole without even touching it and it fades the pitch down enough to beat. Fun sounds. Really what first captivated me about the first whistles I found at a flea market; some really old ones, possibly from Costa Rica. When we played them together (lived in a tipi then) all those weird sound things began to happen.
