Blue Hydrangeas are synonymous with Cape Cod and the Islands. Everywhere you go in the summer months, you will see Hydrangeas in bloom. Their large, round blooms made up of hundreds of tiny individual flowers can be seen behind white picket fences, growing untamed in backyards as they are here and cultivated in different colours. I saw this stand of Hydrangeas in someone's backyard in Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard and I had to paint them. The red birdhouse against the tall grasses behind it was the perfect accent for this composition. Rather than realistically painting the flowers, I used a more impressionistic approach to painting them. This painting would outlet look lovely in a beach house on the Cape or the Islands, a beach house, or someone's home who has a fondness for Hydrangeas. I have fun painting this piece.
