An opal is made up of closely packed spheres of silica oxide and water. Water fills the gaps between the spheres of silica oxide causing diffraction of light at specific
points and creating the "fire" effect.

Lab-grown opals use pure silica with polymer-resin, instead of water, to fill the gaps.
The result is an opal similar in structure to natural opals but with increased stability and durability.
Theproblem with natural opals is that the high water content means that if they become dehydrated, they can develop tiny fractures or cracks.
As such, lab-grown opals are not prone to cracking, so your ring is just as lovely but very durable and maintenance free.
