Knudsen described himself as a regionalist. This piece is inspired by the music of Joaquin Rodrigo and his Concerto de Aranjuez, Spain. Classical music and WFMT was always playing as he created his artwork. This work was also inspired by his European travels through Spain.
Having spent most of his childhood growing up in Brooklyn, Rural Michigan and finally Chicago he became visually inspired by his surroundings. He talked often about his childhood fascination for the city. Through observations and sketches he would focus on outlet skyscrapers, buildings, the Elevated Trains, light posts and signs that he brought together in his compositions. Watching and observing common city scenes both here and in Europe he would create fantastic primitive woodcuts influenced by the German Expressionists.
