Although a less common hemiepiphyte Monstera, Monstera subpinnata is a beautiful example of fragmented foliage where the leaves are alternate, equally along the stem, narrowing at the base. These palm or finger-like leaves extending from the stem obtain larger sizes as the plants climb. In its natural habitat of Ecuador, the plant will climb over 30 feet high while retaining a somewhat thinner stem, whereas indoors, the plant will usually reach a height of 6-8 feet. Most likely you will see an increase in growth size, habit, speed, and quality of leaves when the plant is given the opportunity to climb. If the plant becomes to full or bushy, feel free to prune it back. Without a pole, trellis, or support to climb, the Monstera will run along the ground or surface it rests on.
Just as Monstera deliciosa and Monstera adansonii, the care is easy and the plant thrives in bright, indirect light.

---------------------------------------------
Foliage:
Leaves are pinnate and light to medium green. Each leaf has approximately 3-12 pinnae on either side and terminal pinnae are usually the same size as the lateral. Leaf appearance and size will vary from juvenile to mature with mature leaves up to 1 foot long by 8 inches wide. Juvenile leaves tend to be only 4-6" long and up to 5" wide.
Inflorescence:
Pale yellow to yellow inflorescence flowers on spadix surrounded by a white, cream, or yellow to pink spathe. Unlikely to flower indoors.
Zoned:
10-11
Environment:
Medium to high humidity. It will usually tolerate indoor levels, but with slight difficulty, and will appreciate additional humidity if available. Natural habitat humidity ranges from 55%-75%, but may reach as high as 90%. Grows best in 55-80 degrees F and will tolerate as low as 45 degrees for a very short period of time. Extremely cold-sensitive and will show it when upset.
Light:
Medium to bright indirect light indoors works best (north or east-facing windows may not have enough light). Can handle somewhat lower light conditions, but only if necessary, and may become leggy. Do not leave in direct, all-day or expose to strong afternoon sun. Outdoors place in full to part shade.
Soil:
Good quality aroid mix or well-draining peat based mix. Drainage is a must.
Water:
When watering, take care to fully drench the soil and allow excess to outlet run through the drainage holes. Depending on growing container and medium, watering may be every 5-10 days. Allow soil to dry slightly before watering, the plant does not like constant "wet feet". Soggy or overly damp soil may encourage leaf drop and disease; excessively dry conditions may stunt growth. Decrease water in winter.
Fertilizer:
Is not required, but this plant is a slow grower. If a bigger and faster growth is sought, use a balanced fertilizer every two-four weeks during the growing period.
Notes:
This plant is considered toxic and should not be consumed. Sap emitted from the stem is also poisonous and may cause contact irritation. Plants are shipped with light wrapping and padding according to import/export regulations. Shipping usually occurs on Monday and Tuesday to minimize risk of damage to plants in transit. You may request shipping Wednesday - Friday provided your understanding the live-arrive guarantee is void. Prior to shipping, please contact the shop with questions or concerns and familiarize yourself with the shipping policy in FAQ section. Pot, support poles, driftwood, or grapewood in images not included.
