The nautilus is a mollusk that uses jet propulsion to roam the ocean deep. The chambered or pearly nautilus is a distant cousin to squids, octopi, and cuttlefish. Unlike its color-changing cousins, though, the soft-bodied nautilus lives inside its hard external shell. The shell itself has many closed interior chambers or “compartments.”
The animal resides in the shell's largest chamber, while the other chambers function like the ballast tanks of a submarine. This is the secret to how the nautilus swims. And probably why the name of Captain Nemo's submarine in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea is the Nautilus.
Its history is cool, literary mentions of it are sweet, and this creature is beautiful, especially when made of glass by Paul Labrie! This ornament would make outlet a great addition to your window or Christmas Tree.
Measures approximately:
Shell to tentacles: 4”
Top to bottom of shell: 2.5”
