This listing is for a beautiful large crystal cupped serving bowl. The footed bowl was made by Fostoria and is part of the discontinued American Clear pattern (1915 to 1982) also known as the "Early American" pattern. The pattern has a cool three dimensional square cube design and sawtooth edge and is one of their most popular designs. The serving bowl measures 8-1/2 inches in diameter and stands 4-1/2 inches tall. It is a beautiful hard to find piece that would be an excellent addition to your Fostoria collection and one that would go with any china pattern. It is in excellent vintage condition consistent with age and use and has no chips or cracks.
This Fostoria bowl came from the exquisite Tryon, NC estate of Margaret Culkin Banning, author of 40 books and more than 400 short stories in a career that spanned six decades. Mrs. Banning was born in Buffalo, MN in 1891 and was long active in social and national affairs. Her writings were usually concerned with the problems of religion, youth, women, and social change. As an advocate for women's rights, her writings often featured women in non-traditional roles. She is the first woman admitted to the Duluth Hall of Fame, and a member of the British Information Service in World War II. She went to England to study the conditions of British working women during World War II and after the war she worked in refugee camps in Germany and Austria. A 1912 graduate of Vassar, Mrs. Banning was a trustee of the college from 1937 to 1945. Mrs. Banning's most notable novels included ''Such Interesting People'' (1979), ''Fallen Away'' (1951), ''The Vine and the Olive'' (1965), and ''Mesabi'' (1968). Mrs. Banning died in 1982 in Tryon.
Fostoria Glass Company of Moundsville, West Virginia was a well known glassware and stemware maker that originated in 1887 in Fostoria, Ohio. During it's first ten years, Fostoria made pressed glassware, but early in the 20th century the company realized the importance of developing fine quality blown stemware. At one time the company was the largest maker of handmade glassware in the United States. Their glassware was so popular that all of the presidents, from Eisenhower through Reagan, ordered glassware from Fostoria. Later in 1983, the company was sold to the Lancaster Colony Corporation but, due to outmoded manufacturing facilities and foreign competition, it finally closed it's doors in 1986.
