Johanne Gerber Baca Bowl, Royal Copenhagen Fajance Baca Pottery Dish,Nils Thorsson Pottery,Scandinavian Modern Pottery,Danish Modern Ceramic

This listing is for a beautiful mid 20th century Danish modern abstract design porcelain bowl or dish. This mid century modern style shallow bowl was designed in the late 1960's by the Danish artist Johanne Gerber as part of the BACA collection for Royal Copenhagen Fajance, under the direction of Nils Thorsson. The bowl is made of porcelain clay that was glazed with a modernist design of different fruits, using orange, yellow, black and gray glazes. The bowl/dish is marked with the piece number 786/2883 along with the Royal Copenhagen hallmark (a crown and 3 wavy lines) and Johanne Gerber's insignia in a ring. The bowl measure approximately 6-3/4 inches square and stands 1-3/8 inches tall. It is in excellent used vintage condition consistent with age and use with no cracks, chips, or repairs. There is some light shelf wear on the bottom. This is really a striking piece of mid century modern Danish art pottery that will make a great addition to your collection or the perfect gift!

The Royal Copenhagen brand was founded as the Royal Danish Porcelain Manufactory in 1775 by chemist Frantz Heinrich Müller (1738-1820), under the protection of Denmark's Queen Juliane Marie. Many of the European monarchies at that time had their own porcelain factories and it was good diplomatic practice amongst royalty and aristocracy to give fine porcelain as gifts. Over time, Royal Copenhagen has passed hands from succeeding Danish sovereigns to the Aluminia faience company. Aluminia was a Danish factory of faience or earthenware pottery, established in Copenhagen in 1863. In 1882, the owners of Aluminia purchased the Royal Copenhagen porcelain factory. The factories were operated independently under their respective trade names until 1969, when the use of the Aluminia name was ended. Since then the products have been sold under the mark "Royal Copenhagen Denmark Fajance."

The hallmark of Royal Copenhagen porcelain is painted on the back of each piece and comprises Royal Copenhagen's well-known signature of authenticity, a mark of fine craftsmanship and Danish porcelain art. The hallmark consists of a crown, waves, and the artist's mark. The crown symbolizes Royal Copenhagen's beginnings in the hands of the entrepreneurial monarchy and is decorated with the "Dagmar Cross". The waves symbolize Denmark's three most important bodies of water; the Sound, the Great Belt and the Little Belt. Finally, each painter had their own stamp, marked on the bottom of every piece of porcelain.

Johanne Gerber was one of a group of designers and artists who worked for Royal Copenhagen in the 1960s under the direction of Nils Thorsson. This group included Berte Jessen, Marianne Johnson, Ellen Malmer, Kari Christensen, Beth Breyen and Grete Helland-Hansen, Johanne(s) Gerber, Anne Marie Trolle and Ivan Weiss. Most of the forms it these collections were designed by Nils Thorsson, but Ellen Malmer also designed about 14 of the forms. A special glazing technique was developed by Nils so that each piece turned out slightly differently, giving them a hand-crafted, hand painted appearance due to the nature of the glaze. The designs of each of the artists/pattern designers is very different with the designs of Johanne Gerber amongst the boldest. Her designs often feature strong contrasting colors with complex layering of patterns and textures. All of Johanne's designs have a painterly quality similar to mid 20th century abstract and expressionist paintings.
