The center and corners of this quilt are vintage hand-pieced blocks, and the borders, batting, and backing are new, sewn by machine. The block is known as 'Economy' or 'Square in a Square.' I machine quilted the quilt, which I call Cranberry Wine, using custom designs. The backing is tan muslin for that true vintage look. The batting is 80% cotton/20% polyester; the polyester gives the quilting dimension, and the cotton has that soft, vintage feel. The colors are predominantly cranberry, blue, and tan. Many of the vintage fabrics are called 'shirtings' and may also include some dress prints. Vintage fabrics and hand piecing gives this quilt a truly unique look, with all the quirks and imperfections just adding to its charm. It is gender neutral and would fit perfectly on the back of a cozy couch. The binding is hand sewn on the back of the quilt. Since it includes real vintage outlet fabrics, I wouldn't suggest using it as a baby quilt, as those need to be really sturdy.
I enjoy giving vintage blocks a new life as a finished quilt! Starting with a set of vintage blocks, I let them speak to me on how the quilt should look. I try not to alter the original piecing, just bring them up to date so they behave alongside their companions in a quilt. Many vintage designs have great visual appeal today. Each is unique and custom made. On this one, I made two new blocks, using vintage fabric, to get the right number of blocks. The check cranberry/tan border and the four corner blocks frame the center, making the humble, Economy blocks the stars of the show. Working with vintage pieces can be creatively challenging, so each quilt is unique. If you're looking for something truly special, look no further. As other quilts are completed from vintage blocks, you'll see them here in my shop.
Cranberry Wine includes a hanging sleeve for displaying on a wall, and it has a custom label. This quilt would be right at home in a cottage, vintage, or country setting. It would be perfect for a wedding gift, housewarming gift, birthday, Christmas, or other special occasion. I make quilts in my home -- no smokers here. Our only pet is a tiny dog.
