It's time we went back to our roots. These are the words of the Senegalese writer, activist, and doll maker Fabinta Lo, who, in raising awareness about the Senegalese people, shares the richness and importance of their culture.
Meet Wangari; she is waiting for you to take her home!
This doll has been inspired by Wangari Maathai.
Wangari Muta Maathai (1940- 2011) was a Kenyan social, environmental, and political activist. She was the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree. She became chair of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy and an associate professor at the University of Nairobi, being the first woman to attain those positions in the region.
In 1977 Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement, an environmental non-governmental organization
aimed at countering the deforestation that was threatening the means of subsistence of the agricultural population. The campaign encouraged women to plant trees in their local environments and to think ecologically. The Green Belt Movement spread to other African countries, and contributed to the planting of over thirty million trees.
Maathai was the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, in 2004, "for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace."
This doll is 25 cm (9.5'') tall, and she come with her own stand attached to her feet.
